Dexis Digital X-Rays

Dental Radiographs (x-rays) are an essential part of your dental health. They are a preventative and diagnostic tool that provide valuable information that is not always visible during a routine dental exam. All of our providers utilize this information to diagnosis dental abnormalities and complete a precise treatment plan. Without radiographs, problem areas may go undetected.

Dental Radiographs can reveal:

  • Abscessed Teeth or Cysts
  • Periodontal Bone loss
  • Tumors (Cancerous & Non- Cancerous)
  • Tooth Decay
  • Developmental abnormalities

By detecting these dental issues along with the proper treatment, at an early stage, can not only save you time and financial burden, but also eliminate unnecessary dental discomfort and ultimately save your teeth!

Are digital radiographs safe?

Absolutely! Something that we don’t think of often is that we are all exposed to natural radiation on a daily basis in our environment. The amount of radiation exposure from a digital full mouth series of x-rays can be less than the amount a person receives in a single day from natural sources.

Digital Dental Radiographs produce a very low level of radiation and are considered safe. Drs Scherder, Hedgepath and Carrigan all take the necessary precautions to limit the patient’s exposure to radiation when taking dental x-rays. These precautions include; utilizing a lead apron shield when needed to protect the body along with utilizing up to date modern, digital radiographs that cuts down the exposure time of each x-ray.

How often should dental x-rays be taken?

Every patients needs are different. However, the need for dental radiographs will depend on each patient’s individual dental health needs. One of our dentists and/ or dental hygienists will be more than happy to discuss your recommend x-rays based on the review of your medical and dental history, dental exams, signs and symptoms, age consideration, and risk for disease.

A Full Mouth Series (also known as a FMX) of digital radiographs is recommended for all new patients. A full series is typically good for three to five years depending on the patient. Bite-Wing Radiographs (x-rays of top and bottom teeth biting together) are recommended to be taken at least once a year at your routine (check-up) visits to detect new dental problems and reevaluate existing issues.
